The Beauty of Letting Go

"Nothing lasts forever" - perhaps one of the most painful truths that anyone with a heart can bear to hear. And yet, it is this concept of mortality - whether it's saying goodbye to a favourite pet or a great love that you once thought would last till the end of time - that reminds us that beauty exists even in tragedy. Beauty? How so? Through new beginnings.

While watching Toy Story 3 earlier, one particular scene (shown above) caught me off guard and reduced me to a sobbing pile of emotions. The Pixar film that enchanted audiences in 1995 came to an end two years ago and gave us one of the most bittersweet endings in animation history. It wasn't a fairytale ending; it was quite painful and real. It tugged at our heartstrings and made waterfalls out of our eyes. But in the end, it was necessary.

When Andy painfully bids his toys a final goodbye, a barely audible "Thanks guys" signals the end of a beautiful relationship and the beginning of something else. Maturity, perhaps? We'll never really know.

As the credits rolled alongside a funny montage of the toys being their usual farcical selves, it made me realize that no matter how heartbreaking or difficult it might seem, there will come a time when we need to let go of those whom we most love.

My Favourite Vanity Products: Moisturizer and Organic Shampoo

Aesop's Mandarin Facial Hydrating Cream does wonders for my sensitive, combination skin. It's not very thick, but manages to deliver the right amount of moisture.

Intelligent Nutrients' Harmonic Shampoo is more than just a shampoo. You can even use it as a face or body wash! Talk about multi-tasking. It also leaves the most pleasant sensation on your scalp after showering.

My Favourite Discoveries: Muji Sleepwear and Calvin Klein Underwear

Being at home doesn't give you the right to look like a slob. So when I decided to dress better even when I'm just lounging around the house, I went to Muji and purchased heather grey and black t-shirts, as well as a variety of boxer shorts.

Calvin Klein Underwear has the ability to make you feel sexy, even if you aren't. So I hoarded. Enough said.

The Year That Was

In less than an hour, 2011 will finally be a thing of the past. If there was one thing this has year taught me, it's this: Life is full of unexpected possibilities.

From wonderful new friendships, solo travels, disappointments that could shatter your soul to finding the kind of love that will shake you to the core - these were the highlights of 2011 I won't easily forget.

So what does 2012 have in store for me? For all of us? I can't say. But one thing I'm certain of: 2011 pointed me to the right direction. It taught me that anything and everything is possible. It taught me that when there are hurdles to be crossed, you don't back away. So perhaps, 2012 is the year where I take life by the balls and say, "I'm going to conquer you, whether you like it or not."

With that said, I wish all of you wonderful possibilities for the new year. Thank you for being with me on this journey. Happy New Year.

Simply put, Hong Kong is a shopper's paradise. From cheap, quirky finds, carefully curated one-of-a-kind items, the latest collections from the world's top brands to discounted designer merchandise, Hong Kong pretty much has it all.

Here's a look at some of my go-to places when I'm in town.

By now you all know how much I love A.P.C., so it's always the first stop whenever I'm in Hong Kong. When I was there in April 2011, the staff was feeling extra nice and they gave me a 10 per cent discount! It may not be a lot, but it was still a very nice gesture.

But when I was there about three weeks ago, the boutique on Paterson Street in Causeway Bay was being renovated. I was devastated. But there's always a next time.

When you find yourself in Nathan Road, head to the mall called The One. It houses boutiques such as Beams, Beauty & Youth by United Arrows and Journal Standard. Stock up on clothes, shoes and accessories that are big in Japan.

I.T. Hysan is a must-stop for the latest and greatest in fashion.

Check out the awesome collaboration between I.T. and Mark McNairy. Beautiful, isn't it?

If you want great deals on designer duds, visit Horizon Plaza, which houses high-end department store outlets like Joyce and Lane Crawford (where I scored a leather Comme Des Garcons travel bag at 90 per cent off!), as well as I.T., Emporio Armani, Ralph Lauren and more. You need to be patient though as you'll have to sift through racks and piles of clothes, shoes and accessories before finding a hidden gem. And once you find it, don't let it go.

Citygate Outlets is another must-visit place if you want to score designer items on discount. From Club Monaco, Calvin Klein Underwear, Jack Spade (where I picked up a leather passport holder/wallet) and a gigantic Ralph Lauren shop (I scored a beautiful bengal stripe shirt), you'll surely be spoiled for choice. I don't think anyone can leave this place empty-handed.

My Hong Kong Part 1

For some people, the idea of a perfect getaway would be somewhere quiet like a secluded beach. Well, not me. Rather than going for R&R somewhere tranquil with hardly anyone around, I opt for vibrant cities where there's always something going on. Hong Kong has always ranked high on my go-to scale because of the energy it radiates; the buzz of the people on the streets; the neon lights that illuminate the dreariest of nights.

Here's a pictorial entry on one of my favourite places on earth, celebrating the sights and spectacles Hong Kong has to offer.

The Airport Express is where my trip begins. This service connects the airport to key parts of Hong Kong such as Tsing Yi, Kowloon and Hong Kong

Working your way around the city is made easy by the subway, or more commonly known as the MTR. There's a certain rush I get every time I descend to this subterranean wonderland. The ads adorning the walls, fashionable folks whizzing by you, the colourful tiled walls - these are the things that never fail to leave me in awe.

One of the best things about Hong Kong are the hidden neighbourhoods. Break away from the main shopping drags and numerous malls and you'll find specialty boutiques, quaint cafes and a whole lot of character. Such is the case with St. Francis Street in the Wan Chai area. Make your way up this steep road and you'll be greeted by...

From the Monocle shop, walk further down and you'll see F.I.L. Visvim fans, rejoice! The beautiful structure and space perfectly complements the apparel from the famous Japanese label.

The fun doesn't end at F.I.L. Turn right and you'll find a small alley that will lead you to Sun Street, where the amazing specialty store Ka-pok is. If you're looking for Uniform Wares watches, Mismo bags, Astier de Villatte perfume or Mizensir candles, this is the place to go. They also have a little cafe where you can order a delicious cuppa.

A Closer Look: Monocle Shop, Hong Kong

I just came back from a weekend trip to Hong Kong. Of course, the vacation wouldn't be complete without visiting the Monocle shop. Here's a closer look inside, as well as some of the items currently available.

As you enter the store, the section on the left showcases some of the latest Monocle collaborations with clothing brands like Loopwheeler, Kitsune and FilMelange. The shelves on top are dotted with a variety of items like CDs, books, decor, the BlackBerry x Monocle phone and past issues of the magazine.

To keep your footsies warm while on the plane, check out the colourful socks from the Tabio x Monocle collab. They come in an assortment of colour combinations and two sizes, small and large.

Over on the right side, you'll find the famous Porter x Monocle bags, perfect for business travel or solo sojourns. You can also find other items like leather travel slippers, Brooklyn leather wristbands, Comme Des Garcons fragrances and candles, passport holders, business card cases and an assortment of finely crafted stationery.

While the shop is small, they've managed to maximize the space. In this photo, you'll see various issues of the magazine displayed on the steps.

I have seen Hong Kong evolve and transform into the bustling Asian hub it is today. If I remember correctly, I first visited the city-state 23 years ago and was instantly in awe of its vibrant streets and sights, brimming with the frenetic energy of people coming together for commerce, new opportunities and a good time. Over the years, this hustle and bustle attracted people to constantly visit Hong Kong, myself included. This deluge of people wanting to experience what Hong Kong has to offer only meant one thing – progress.

Today, Hong Kong is one of the most exciting places to be in. New concepts in the world of retail, food and business pop up so fast that yesterday’s hottest trend seems so passé the day after. Luckily, one individual is on hand to capture the ins and outs of Hong Kong’s architecture, design, art and fashion scene before they become a thing of the past. JJ Acuña, an architect and designer by day and a cool-hunter by night, has given his international audience an in-depth look at what’s hip and happening in Hong Kong, thanks to his blog, theWanderlister+ Asia. This time, we shine the spotlight on JJ and discover what he's into and what he's all about.

What do you do?
I'm an architect and designer for a Hong Kong corporate firm that is focused on commercial and large scale projects in China and the region.

How would you describe your personal style?
I grew up in Texas, schooled in Upstate New York, then moved to New York City for grad school. Eventually, I ended up in Hong Kong. I have to say that my style and taste in clothing is undeniably American, maybe even a bit on the preppier side. But Hong Kong, with it's fashion conscious population and bespoke English influences, has added a bit of fit, cut and refinement in how I put my outfits together. So on any given day, you may see me with a nice tailored blazer from Pal Zileri, a white cotton button down from Uniqlo, Jeans from Initial (a local Hong Kong Brand) and shoes by Junya Watanabe for Tricker's. I dont pile on as much accessories as some guys, but a nice silver watch and my Marc by Marc Jacobs Leather bracelet does the trick. As for my bag, I prefer using my personalised "JJ" navy blue Music Bag from the Cambridge Satchel Company.

If we rummage through your closet, we’ll find…
Jeans (my Texas side), loads of navy trousers (my prep school side), button down shirts, jackets and t-shirts from Uniqlo and American Apparel. I'm actually more of a t-shirt and jeans fellow. And for some reason, I have a solid collection of Havaianas.

Who or what inspires your personal style?
I was just doing a mood board the other day of the people who inspire me the most. I have to say that I'm inspired by Marc Jacobs' tenacity and multi-tasking abilities. I look to Tom Ford for keeping things gentlemanly even at the most stressful of situations. There is also Oprah for her optimistic outlook about change and becoming a better person everyday. Additionally, I love my mother and her classy attitude towards life. For someone in her 60s, you can pretty much say she has dealt with everything in life you can think of (in heels!) and not a single strand of hair is out of place.

If you could only wear one label your entire life, what would it be and why?
I would just die. I believe in being true to yourself, but I also believe in reinvention and forcing yourself to play with other designers, brands and styles. I really don't like it when folks stick to basic black or refuse to wear anything but Comme Des Garcons, for example. There's a reason why there are a lot of designers in the world. It is a gift. Enjoy all of it - but only if you want to.

What is the one item in your wardrobe that best represents you?
My black thick frames from Robert Geller. People usually cannot recognise me without glasses.

I don’t leave home without…
Cash and credit cards, My Canon S95, business cards and TROIKA wallet, my iPhone, my Cambridge Music Bag and a positive attitude towards everything.

What's the best thing about living in Hong Kong?
Accessibility. The easiness of getting to different places in a short amount of time allows me to get things done. There is also a strong "can do" attitude present here. Things are definitely changing in Hong Kong and I think now is the best time to help define how it changes.

And the worst?
The pollution and the small spaces. This is something that Singapore has over Hong Kong - greenery, blue skies and larger living areas.

Where would we find you in Hong Kong ?
If I had time off (which I never do), you would find me window shopping at Kapok or Tung Street, having a beer at The Globe or The Pawn, coffee at FUEL or Barista Jam, checking out art exhibits at OSAGE and partying it up at XXX or FLY.

What are you thankful for at the end of the day?
Im thankful for having the means and resources to write my blog about Hong Kong and to be able to juggle this with a full time career and having patient friends, who are still getting used to dealing with a more public me, versus the private one they were used to. Also having a great network of bloggers in Hong Kong who completely understand what it's like to seriously blog. At the end of the day however, everything is really all about balance and perseverance. And great ideas too.

My feet's best friend - Muji sneakers

Muji is heaven for a lot of people. Whether you're in the market for understated and elegant luggage, furniture, bags, linens, towels, clothes or toiletries, the Japanese mega-brand has everything you could possibly need.

Muji is where I go to stock up on oxford shirts and sleepwear. Aside from those, it is also my go-to place for sneakers. They're cheap, comfortable and always hit the right notes when it comes to design - slim, simple and they perfectly go with anything and everything.

The sneakers featured below are the latest offerings from the brand and I picked up a pair in beige for an upcoming trip. With these on, I can already tell that walking won't be such a chore, thanks to the unbelievable comfort they offer.

Our Legacy Derby for Trés Bien

I am on a self-imposed shopping ban and, for the lack of a better word, it sucks. Especially when this beautiful Our Legacy derby turned up on Trés Bien. The shoes come in a beautiful shade of burgundy, which I think will pair well with dark denims or khaki chinos. Top the outfit off with a white oxford shirt and you're good to go. But until the shopping ban ends, these will, for now, remain a dream.

Kitsuné S/S 2012 - The Great Gatsby

Alphabeticalife Q + A with Alexei Villaraza

Before starting on the entry, I just realised that its been almost two years since the last Q + A. What took so long? I'm not really sure. Perhaps its the lack of interesting personalities to feature or the fact that work has been taking a lot of my time. But here it is once again, with Alexei Villaraza taking centre stage.

Alexei, a PR whiz, blogger and newspaper lifestyle columnist, will soon be adding "New Yorker" under his belt as he will be flying off to New York City for graduate studies. Lucky, you say? Extremely. Recently, we've been having conversations that revolve around places to see, food to eat and awesomeness to be experienced in the city that never sleeps. So before he settles in a completely different time zone, I figured a Q + A with this witty, opinionated and dashing gentleman was in order.

What do you do?
I’m an incoming graduate student at New York University (NYU), about to take up Public Relations and Corporate Communications this Fall. Before deciding to become a student again, I was a Senior Accounts and Media Relations Manager at Bridges, a boutique PR and Marketing Communications agency.

Describe your personal style.
I like things clean and simple. I don’t like wearing too many colours unless its gingham or madras, which I would pair with something solid. Prints on prints make me dizzy.

When I buy clothes, I always look for interesting details like wooden or mother of pearl buttons, intricate embroidery, printed cuffs, quirky pockets or a unique collar design. I also don’t like things that scream the brand. I think it’s tacky.

If we go through your closet, what would we find a lot of?
You’d find a lot of tapered shirts in white, blue and black. It’s also peppered with a few pieces in grey, pink and khaki. All my pants are slim fit and are from Uniqlo. They’re mostly in black or very dark denim - because Oprah said when buying denim, always go for the darkest shade!

Who or what inspires your personal style? Can you briefly talk about it?
I’ve always loved the design aesthetic of Hedi Slimane – fine, slim tailoring executed in a non-pretentious way. Locally, I love the stuff Joey Samson churns out. His menswear is almost like Hedi’s without the hefty price tag. The tailoring of both Hedi and Joey are exquisite and the clothes hug you in all the right places.

I think to make an impact, you should always wear clothes that actually fit you. If not, you’d either look stupid or look and feel uncomfortable when wearing it.

If you could only wear one label your entire life, what would it be and why?
When I love a certain brand, I’ll stick by it until I find something better. For now, it has got to be Tyler. I love the fit of their tapered dress shirts and knit tops. I can wear their shit from day to night, even with sneakers or loafers. Hopefully, I’ll find the same kind of stuff when I move to New York.

What is the one item of clothing in your wardrobe that best represents you?

What are the five things you can't leave home without?
A watch, my phone, a handkerchief, a pack of mints and my debit card. I try to be on time, easy to reach, minty fresh and prepared for anything.

Daily essentials

What are you looking forward to when you move to New York City?
I’m so bored of Manila. Life is too slow. I can’t wait to try all the restaurants I read about in the New York Times or sample all the food trucks (I hear there’s a halal truck that serves the most awesome falafels). Last time I was in the Big Apple, I missed out on the Romanov Jewels exhibit so I’m expecting in the two (or so) years I’ll be there, I’ll get to see more exhibits and shows. I’d also love to clock in some time relaxing in Central Park with a good book and cupcakes from the Magnolia Bakery or people watch while seated on the steps of the New York Public Library.

I know being in New York at this phase in my life will be a completely new and different experience for me and I cant wait to savour every minute of it.

What will you miss the most about Manila?
I’ve met really awesome people this year, some of who I’ve become really close with. If I could stuff them all in my suitcase, I’d take them with me so we can experience New York together.

And the least?
What is there to miss about Manila? Definitely not the pothole-laden streets, incompetent drivers who don’t respect pedestrians and the heat. Since I’ll be living with relatives for a while, it’ll feel just like home.

What are you thankful for at the end of the day?
No matter how unproductive or productive it was, I’m glad I was still able to live it.

People have recently been noting that this generation is running out of good pop stars. For some, Lady Gaga's antics are getting old, as she already set herself so high that she can't even manage to top herself. Some complain that every other Top 40 song that comes out of the radio has either been autotuned, digitized or bastardized. While I agree with some of the observations, I believe there are hidden gems in the pop music industry that are waiting to be found - all we really need to do is patiently sift through the rubble.

Her latest EP, Experiments, has been on loop in my iPod for the past couple of days.

One such gem that I've been recently enjoying is the multi-hyphenated Florrie. This singer-songwriter-drummer-model from the UK proves that she's more than just a pretty face. She's talented, beautiful, chic and produces pop songs that are perfect in so many ways. From the infectious beats of "Begging Me", the very sexy "What You Doing This For?" to "Give Me Your Love", which showcases her outstanding drumming skills, Florrie's songs will surely make you sit up and listen, tap your feet and realize that there's hope for pop music after all.

How important is customer service...

Particularly in a specialty boutique that sells premium items? In my opinion, it plays a tremendously important role. I'm no expert in customer service or retail practices, but the way a sales associate attends to a customer can either make or break your shopping experience. And in my case, if I find that the service being offered is outstanding, I wouldn't mind spending a little extra just to show my appreciation.

Case in point - the A.P.C. boutique at the Raffles Hotel Shopping Arcade in Singapore.

When I visited the newly opened boutique sometime last year, I was greeted by enthusiastic employees, eager to show me around and showcase the latest collection. I was impressed. When I told them I wanted to try on some items, they carried the clothes for me, unbuttoned them carefully and hung them up nicely in the fitting room. In between all of this, I had a decent conversation with the shop manager and we talked about the difference between A.P.C. in Singapore and Hong Kong. To cut this short, the experience left me more than happy so I bought a number of items. To this day, even if I'm only browsing, I am treated with the same enthusiasm I experienced from day one.

As a second example, both Comme Des Garçons boutiques in Singapore and Bangkok know what customer service is all about. The sales associates are more than happy to assist you in any way they can, they try their best to answer your queries and are far from snooty just because they're working for the cult label.

However, there are shop staff who are, sad to say, a total disappointment. It's quite sad that Surrender, which is home to some of my favourite brands like Porter, Mark McNairy, Band of Outsiders and Thom Browne, has terrible customer service. It was so bad that I promised never to purchase anything from that store. Here's what happened:

I visited the boutique for the very first time in their new location at the Raffles Hotel Shopping Arcade last year. I was quite excited because I found out that this was the only place I could get a hold of Band of Outsiders in Singapore. When I stepped in, nobody greeted me, even if the shop was totally empty except for three shop staff. Two of them were posted by the Band of Outsiders section so I walked over and picked up a pair of shoes to check out the price. They saw me, but didn't really say anything and continued on with their conversation. Seeing that the shoes didn't have a price tag, I asked one of them how much it was. His answer was a very curt "$350. It's 30 per cent off, but that's the last pair." Before I could even utter a word, he turned his back on me and continued with the conversation he was having with his colleague. I was mortified and left immediately after that.

On my second visit, I wasn't really expecting a welcoming committee. And as expected, a deafening silence greeted me. This time, there was only one shop staff in the empty store and he just stood behind the counter, tinkering away on his laptop. From then on, I never set foot in the store again.

To end this essay of an entry, here's what I have to say: Be nice. There's no room for meanies.

I can't explain it, but I am obsessed with this Kitsuné cardigan. Definitely on my to-buy list. The good thing about Kitsuné is that they have a cardigan in every collection, no matter the season.

These Prada shoes from the S/S 2011 collection are beautiful! I've already mentioned before that I like the thick-soled, colourful version, but these tamer ones are a bit more realistic for my wardrobe.

I realised I always put up an A.P.C. bag on my blog from every season, and this one from the latest collection seems perfect. Full leather and in black. I think I want this.

This Comme Des Garçons leather wallet/envelope was supposed to be on my to-buy list for an upcoming Hong Kong trip this April. I figured it would be cheaper there, but when I saw it at the new Singapore CDG boutique yesterday, I had to buy it right away. Good thing I did - it was the last piece! Now I have a decent case for my passport, plane tickets and foreign currency.

As one grows older, he/she tends to realize that in fashion, it is the classics the remain in style. And in this age where people tend to go a bit overboard when it comes to design, there are a select few that go against the tide and create clothes that will last a lifetime - not just a few seasons.

One example is Kitsuné, the cool Parisian label which has been producing a fine selection of garments for quite some time now. For Fall-Winter 2010, they offer a collection entitled "Ivy League". From the name alone, you'll know what to expect - preppy-approved pieces that convey elegance, nonchalance and character. According to the brand's creative director, Masaya Kuroki, the collection is heavily influenced by Ivy League schools, the TV series Mad Men and the 1960s.
