Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix: First Listen

Back in 2000, I remember chancing upon the video of Phoenix's "If I Ever Feel Better" on MCM, a French music channel. Instantly, I fell in love with the band and their distinct sound.

Nine years later, the band is still going strong and perhaps, more popular than ever. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is the group's fourth studio album and is described as their "career-defining album, filled with the band's signature melding of synthetics and organics, sharp, danceable rhythms, infectious choruses with a considerable dose of aural panache, and candy-colored pop sensibilities."

The album starts out strong with the first three songs: "Lisztomania", "1901" and "Fences". I'm not an expert when it comes to music reviews but these songs are sure to get your feet tapping, your heads bobbing and your fingers snapping. The following songs such as "Love Like A Sunset" and "Rome" are a little bit slower than the majority of the songs but it's a welcome change of pace as it showcases the band's experimental side. Overall, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is an album that will definitely please Phoenix's long time fans such as myself and has the ability to win over a slew of new ones as well.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix will be out on May 25, 2009. Check out their first single "Lisztomania".

Special thanks to Glassnote Music for sending me an advanced copy of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Check out their website for more information on Phoenix and other artists such as Justin Nozuka, I Hate Kate and Blowing Trees.

Just got this album last week, and I've played it many times over the last few days. Weirdly, I love the album from "Love Like a Sunset" onwards better than the first three songs.
